What Is a French Bulldog?
You can also call them simply “Frenchie.” In the United States, French Bulldogs are the sixth most popular breed. They are a cousin of the English Bulldog.
Like the English Bulldog, they have short-nosed faces and the same wrinkles. However, the French Bulldog has bat-like ears, which really stand out from their body.
The AKC says that French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful, adaptable, and smart.
Size and Color
French Bulldogs are eleven to thirteen inches tall. They weigh 28 pounds or fewer. The AKC, judges, clubs, and breeders officially recognize nine standard colors for the French Bulldog.

Where Did the French Bulldog Come From?
Frenchies were first bred in England in the 1800s. Pugs and Terriers were bred with English Bulldogs. Lace workers in Nottingham desired a small Bulldog to be a “lap dog” who would keep them warm.
During the industrial revolution, however, lace work became mechanical in England. The English lace workers moved to France, and the beloved bat-like ears on a small Bulldog became popular, particularly with society ladies.
At that time, they were called Bouledogue Francais, and later received the name French Bulldog, or “Frenchie” as you hear it.

When they are puppies, they are energetic and love to get into trouble. French Bulldog pups are a handful, yes. They like to play rough and chew through toys.

Because French Bulldog pups are a flat-faced breed, they are prone to breathing problems. They can do poorly in humid and hot weather. Other occasional health issues include:

French Bulldogs pups need regular baths and skinfold care. Keep an eye on their weight. Also, keep them up-to-date on vaccinations.
Especially if your Frenchie spends a lot of time away from home and has an active social life, good preventative care is even more important. Your veterinarian can help you with keeping the right schedule for healthcare checkups, vaccinations, and more. Ask your veterinarian about heartworm, flea, and tick prevention medications.
